Italy's train service is run by Trenitalia, part of the Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato.
The Trenitalia website also gives access to services such as hotel reservations, car hire reservations and ordering a taxi or a station porter for luggage assistance. Information booklets with train times and destinations for local or longer trips are available in the stations and some tourist offices. Train ServicesTrenitalia has a number of different trains:
Services for disabled passengersTrenitalia provides specific services for disabled passengers, including those who are wheelchair-bound and mobility impaired as well as sight impaired.
Italian residents who receive a mobility allowance are entitled to discount travel with a Carta Blue. This is also available to people with a temporary mobility problem. Special concessions and facilities exists for blind passengers and the person accompanying them. Two equipped places are reserved for wheelchair passengers and their companions on the medium and long-distance trains (trains equipped with these seats will indicate so on the train timetable). Extra help and assistance to get on and off may be provided on the trains marked with a special sign, and help on departure and arrival can be organised. It is recommended that wheelchair travellers call Trenitalia in advance to book a specially adapted seat on the equipped trains. Access to carriages is by special lifts at the stations. Guide dogs of any size accompanying a blind person are allowed on trains and do not require a veterinarian's certification stating the animal does not carry any diseases or infestations. Traveling with AnimalsDogs (and domestic animals) are allowed on bookable Trenitalia trains but must be kept in a carrier container or muzzled, depending on the train and size of the animal. The animal must be mentioned when booking the journey. These animals may travel for free in first and second class, but may not occupy a seat (unless paid for). All animals taken on Trenitalia trains must be accompanied by a certificate of registration (certificato di iscrizione all’anagrafe canina) proving that the animal has been registered at it's local canine registry office. Failure to follow these procedures may result in a fine. Guide dogs of any size accompanying a blind person are allowed on any train and do not require a veterinarian's certification regarding diseases or infestations.
